چکیده

AbsfructThe IEEE 802.6 standard for metropolitan area networks does not provide multiple priority traffic for connectionless data services. A priority mechanism that was considered in earlier versions of the standard showed to be not effective. As of now, there exists no protocol for multiple access dual bus networks that is able to implement preemptive priorities and, at the same time, can satisfy minimal fairness requirements for transmissions at the highest priority level. In this study, a protocol with strictly preemptive priorities, i.e., a protocol that does not admit low-priority traffic if the load from highpriority traffic exceeds the capacity of the transmission channel, is presented. In addition, the protocol guarantees fairness for transmissions at the highest priority level. By introducing a general characterization of bandwidth allocation schemes for dual bus networks, existing priority mechanisms can be categorized according to the provided quality of service. The unique existence of a bandwidth allocation scheme for multiple priority traffic is shown with a full utilization of the channel capacity, with a fair distribution of bandwidth respective to traffic from a particular priority level and with preemptive priorities. The performance of the presented protocol is compared to existing proposals for multiple priority mechanisms. It is shown that adopting the new protocol results in shorter access delays for high-priority transmissions. The protocol allows the stations of the network to react quickly to load changes. It is shown that the effectiveness of the priority scheme, compared to priority schemes using the bandwidth-balancing mechanism, is less dependent on increasing the transmission speed of the network.

Bus Priority of SCOOT Evaluated in a VISSIM Simulation Environment

Transit usage is based on reliable and timely service. Priority is one method for maintaining reduced transit travel times and a reliable schedule, which make transit more attractive. However, with most buses operating within the same traffic lanes as other vehicle traffic, priority policy affects the surrounding traffic. Consequently, priority is often limited to minimal green time extensions ...

Using Gps for Bus Priority in London: Traffic Signals Close to Bus Stops

London's bus network is one of the largest and most comprehensive urban transport systems in the world. The contribution of buses is recognised by implementing a series of initiatives including bus priority at traffic signals. London has a long history of the implementation of bus priority at traffic signals. It has kept pace with the development of new technologies by updating its bus priority...

A Dynamic Model for Adaptive Bus Signal Priority

The adaptive traffic signal control system, as well as the Transit Signal Priority (TSP) concept has both been viewed as important opportunities for reducing overall traffic congestions and improving bus transit services. However, few studies were conducted on combining them together. A dynamic signal timing optimization model was developed in this research, which aims at reallocating green tim...

Overload Performance of Media Access Protocols for Dual Bus High-Speed Metropolitan Area Networks

In this paper we evaluate some of the media access control (MAC) protocols for high-speed metropolitan area networks based on the dual bus architecture. These MAC protocols are the Distributed Queue Dual Bus (DQDB) family of protocols and the Cyclic Reservation Multiple Access (CRMA). We carry out several simulation experiments to compare the performance of DQDB family of protocols with the CRM...
